EDIT. I did have this as Rail 'Things" but now anything with slow shutter speed! :D

I say Rail 'Things' as I have some photos with slow shutter speeds of various subjects.

Please feel free to post yours in this thread too! I'm interested to see what others do so I can expand my repetoire!

So here we go.
All photos with a Canon 350D DSLR.

Zig Zag Railway's Bottom Points Signal Box.
Image
Date: 26 Sept 2006, ISO-400, 7sec at F/3.5
I was wanting to recreate what the main line looked like before the Signal Box was closed and removed.

3x 81's on the Ore train wait to cross the IP.
Image
Date: 11 April 2007, ISO-100, 30sec at F/10
Ore train on the up main waits to enter Lithgow Down Yard as the Indian Pacific rolls through.

Nepean River Rail Bridge.
Image
Date: 22 July 2006, ISO-100, 180sec at F/5.6
Testing out my then still fairly new Cable Release for BULB. Up until this point I had used the self timer to avoid camera and shutter shake.

82 class on a coal train through Lapstone.
Image
Date: 3 February 2007, ISO-100, 15sec at F/10
Set up time on this one was about 5 seconds. Heard the train coming down the hill, and ran to set up tripod. Camera settings were almost literally a roll of the dice (or more like a spin of the settings wheels!)

Level Crossing, Blackheath from the western side.
Image
Date: 21 April 2006, ISO-100, 25sec at F/22
One of my favourites. Taken as the gates were lowering to get all 3 aspects on the Traffic lights.

Now, show me yours! :P

I'll forward the Blackheath one to my Blachheathen sister.

Thanks "sucker" and brownie.

These sort of photos are the reason I got a Digital SLR in the first place. I grew up with my father taking lots of "time lapse" slides as I remember him calling them.

Star Trails were one of my favourites that he took. Put the camera out the back for a few hours at a time. The DSLR's don't like that really as they rely on batteries.

I'm gonna try it one day soon anyway. One problem with it is it can allegedly corrupt your Memory Card if the battery fails. [shrugs] I'm off next weekend to a place where the City lights don't shine so bright, so I may give it a go then.

Yep, every shot is brilliant Benny. I'm quite amused by the dotted line effect on the boom gates.

Thanks.

I like the dots too. It's the flashing lights when moving.

Thats the sort of thing to look for on moving objects. Cars with indicators on prior to turning is also good. The BOG on the back of some trains if with new batteries would look good too.

That one I love ... and the boom gates aren't half bad either. :D

I did a little non-rail experimenting in Honkers with the DSLR, but have yet to try it back here. Closest I've got are these at dusk, from a point and shoot ...

They good for a P&S Biqua.

Show us the Non-Rail stuff too.

I have lots of waterfalls and around the harbour shots.

I experimented with moonlit exposures on slide film a few years back and the results were pretty good. Some examples:

The southbound Sunlander passenger train speeding through Yalboroo. While it is not a true moonlit shot, the effect looks pretty good :) 80 seconds @ F5.6, Sensia 400.
Image

The same train again, a bit further south at Aminungo Loop. 4 minutes @ F5.6, Sensia 400. Would have been a better result if the exposure time was 5 minutes.
Image

Loaded and Empty coal trains crossing at Birralee Loop on the Newlands Line. 12 minutes @ F4, Sensia 100.
Image

The loaded train from the above shot is pictured here, dropping down the Bogie Range near Binbee Loop. 13 minutes @ F4, Sensia 100.
Image

The down signals at Thoopara Loop. 13 minutes @ F4, Sensia 100.
Image

A couple others that are "normal" night shots.
Racecourse Mill loco Munburra leaving the yard. 20sec @ F8, Sensia 100
Image

Macknade Mill #14 crossing the Herbert River at Cordelia. 3 minutes @ F9.5, Sensia 100.
Image

Haven't tried any really long shots since getting a DSLR. Should get off my fat arse and try it one night :)

80 Freakin' seconds!!!! That's the sort of thing that makes me wish I'd saved up for a DSLR - the longest I can do is 8 seconds.

This is 1 second, too much platform lighting for anything longer :x

Firstly, get away from the bright lights with the current camera.

Second, start saving for the DSLR!

If you do, don't just consider Canon and Nikon. Olympus and Pentax both have very good priced twin lens kits, that are as good as the brand names most people have.

That one from Lapstone is fucking great :D. Are platforms a good place for this kinda thing with all the lights?

Especially when you consider there was a "night mode", but that was it as far as shutter speed went.

Non rail eh? Alrighty, here's a handful from a Canon 400D - I'm still learning to drive it, so some of the settings probably aren't recommended, however seem to have mostly done the trick:

I have only up to 3sec exposure, but I've had some pretty good shots out of it. Just let me find where they are...
